Union Minister Edu to Launch Blockchain-Powered Digital Degree System at NIT Rourkela Convocation – Edexlive

National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela is holding its 19th convocation on Saturday August 13, 2022. Union Minister of Education and Minister of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan will honor the occasion by as main guest. The event is held at the institute’s Bhubaneshwar Behera Auditorium from 10 a.m.

According to a press note released by the institute, NIT Rourkela will be the first NIT institute and the second institute – after IIT Kanpur – to implement the issuance of certificates digitally by Blockchain. This method is now being implemented to commemorate the diamond jubilee year of the institute and celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence – Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. As it is the year of the Diamond Jubilee, the convocation is marked as the convocation of the Diamond Jubilee.

Moreover, it is with the help of the C3i Innovation Hub at IIT Kanpur that the institute will award these digital degrees. This was led by Padma Shri, Professor Manindra Agrawal and his team made up of Professor Sandeep Shukla, Professor Tanima Hajra and a start-up, CRUBN, incubated at the C3i Innovation Hub. This hub is part of the National Blockchain Project which helps implement futuristic technology in academic endeavours. In addition, it will facilitate the document verification process by quickly receiving an OTP (one-time password) to benefit from the connection.

Explaining the significance of this futuristic technology, Professor Manish Okade, HoD, Computer & Informatics Center (CIC), NIT Rourkela, said, “Student degrees will now be accessible from anywhere in the world using smartphones, laptops, desktops and tablets. since it is stored in a digital wallet for life. This digital wallet provides a secure and tamper-proof environment that students can share with their potential employers. It could be verified instantly, avoiding the laborious third-party verification process that easily takes 2-3 weeks now.”

“When Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan presses a button during the XIX Annual Convocation of NIT Rourkela, the digital portal https://digitaldegree.nirkl.ac.in/ will be activated. Here, the student will enter their matriculation number and an OTP will be sent to the registered graduate student mobile number as well as their email id. With this OTP, the student will be able to obtain their degrees from the Blockchain,” the press note said.

According to the note, 6 institute gold medals, 5 endowment gold medals, 5 endowment awards, 70 branch leader medals and 1 cash endowment award will be awarded to the graduates. Additionally, a total of 11 alumni will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award-2021. A total of 1,555 students (859 undergraduates, 608 postgraduates and 88 doctoral students) will receive degrees.

As the convocation coincides with the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign on August 13, many events like a painting competition, a marathon with the said central theme, a street theater play by students, a cycling rally by NCC cadets and of the NSS and an institute parade function involving security personnel, NCC cadets and campus school children are planned.

Meanwhile, Sundargarh MP, Odisha and Sundargarh Standing Parliamentary Committee Chairman Jual Oram and Rourkela Member of Legislative Assembly and Sundargarh District Planning Council Chairman Sarada Prasad Nayak will also attend at the event.
