“We can’t even agree on what disinformation is”

On Wednesday, Sen. Rand Paul asked Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas about the recently announced “disinformation governance board,” noting that there’s not even agreement on what is misinformation and that the government has a long history of spreading it.

Paul asked Mayorkas about the new board, which has been dubbed a “ministry of truth” by critics, referencing George Orwell. 1984.

The senator asked the DHS chief “Do you think the Steele dossier included Russian misinformation?” prompting Mayorkas to respond that he is “not equipped” to respond to this.

Paul continued, “You say your new misinformation advice is going to help the public misinform. You claim that it will not be a national question, but a question of foreigners. Those bad Russians.

“Here is my question,” he continued. The FBI concludes that the Steele dossier was full of Russian disinformation. CNN has gladly propagated this misinformation for years and years. The difference between your opinion and ours is that no matter how despicable it is that CNN spread this misinformation, I wouldn’t lecture them, I wouldn’t say on a government website that CNN is wrong to spread misinformation .

“We can’t even agree on what disinformation is!” Paul asserted, adding “You can’t even admit that it was disinformation that the Russians gave information to the Steele dossier!”

Mayorkas replied, “Where we get involved is where there is connectivity between disinformation and homeland security threats.”

“Well, the Russians could be considered that,” retorted Paul, adding “You mentioned that the other day when you were trying to get away from censorship.”

“Let’s say you find misinformation and CNN releases it, what are you going to do? Are you going to tell Putin, ‘you shouldn’t do that’?” Paul then questioned.

Mayorkas then tried to distract Paul by talking about drug cartels.

Elsewhere during the hearing, Mayorkas admitted he was “unaware” of the crazy videos his new Truth Ministry chief, Nina Jankowicz, had previously posted on social media.

As we noted earlier this week, Jankowicz said free speech made her “shiver” and falsely called the Hunter Biden laptop story “Russian disinformation.”

When pressed about it by Republican Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy, Mayorkas said, “I wasn’t aware of that,” adding, “We don’t discuss the internal hiring process, ultimately. of account as secretary, I am responsible for the decisions of the Department. internal security.

He continued: “I understand that Ms. Jankowicz is a subject matter expert in the area in which she will be working on behalf of the department.”

Jankowicz is also on a video describing legitimate concerns about the teaching of critical race theory in Loudoun County schools as “for-profit misinformation,”

The Liberty Beacon Project is now growing at an almost exponential rate, and we are grateful and delighted! But we must also be practical. For 7 years, we asked for no donations and built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. We have therefore just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask you to take this into account when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and consideration… (TLB)
