By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “To strengthen Belize’s data collection and health response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO) donated 50 tablets to the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MoHW) for its vaccinators, ”PAHO Caribbean said. “In addition to tablets, several IT equipment was also donated to strengthen MoHW’s emergency communication capacity in emergencies and disasters”.

This equipment is in addition to laptops, tablets, printers and wireless routers that were donated by PAHO / WHO Belize in June for the country’s Immunization Information System (IIS).

“The donation of tablets will allow effective and efficient recording of demographic information of people who receive the COVID-19 vaccine,” said Dr Noreen Jack, PAHO / WHO Representative in Belize. “With the right records, the collected immunization data can be analyzed and used to establish a population-based immunization registry that is essential for assessing immunization coverage. “

PAHO Caribbean said the equipment will complement the IIS to improve electronic data collection. The ISI consists of confidential, population-based, computerized databases that record all immunization doses administered to said PAHO.

“I cannot stress how much these donations have helped the country of Belize and the MoHW in the fight against the COVID-19 virus,” said MOHW Minister Michel Chebat. “One of the many goals of this ministry is to educate the public on pressing issues in the health sector. At the moment, these questions are mainly centered on education regarding the COVID-19 virus and the importance of the COVID-19 vaccination initiative. These donations allow us at MOHW to take a step forward and get closer to our goals. Thank you to our partners in PAHO / WHO for their continued support.

IT equipment is expected to strengthen the Ministry of Health’s emergency communication in emergencies and disasters. It consists of 6 mobile radios / VHF base, 6 power supplies, 7 omnidirectional aluminum antennas, 8 laptops with carrying cases, 1 printer and 1 Explorer 510 BGAN terminal.

PAHO / WHO Belize said the equipment will be distributed to district emergency health operations centers (EOCs) across the country and should help the health ministry maintain 24-hour radio communication during emergencies and disasters.
