Birmingham authorities on alert after 9 children were shot dead in 2021
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WIAT) – After 6-year-old Carlos Moore was shot dead Thursday night off Avondale Street, nine children were the victims of gun violence in 2021; three were shot dead in November alone.
News of Thursday’s shooting has incredulous groups like the Birmingham Housing Authority who want to know why this is becoming a problem in the city.
“You know, the Housing Authority donated $ 25,000 to Crime Stoppers, along with others, for crimes against youth. The crimes are still not cleared up. Money is not enough either. It doesn’t have to be, ”said CEO David Northern Sr.
Some of the cases involving children still have no arrests, including the person who shot and killed two-year-old Major Turner. Turner would have turned 3 on November 19.
“People are still getting shot. Major Turner’s gunman is still there somewhere. And now we have another baby shot. While we have one in the hospital, she is still fighting for her life. It’s really disheartening, ”said Northern Sr.
And while efforts have been made to curb the violence, pastors like Dr. Michael Wesley Sr. believe they can do more than offer a higher reward.
“No. And I still think there needs to be more. We need to get the message deeper into homes,” said Dr. Wesley Sr. “Gun Safety Education. The whole idea of tidying up weapons, not even to have them at all.
